Abul Mal Abdul Muhit
Mr. Abul Mal Abdul Muhit is an eminent economist and internationally acclaimed diplomat, great pioneer of environmental movement, passionate activist of the language movement and a freedom fighter.
Mr. Muhit was initiated into politics and social work during his school life. In 1951, he stood first in IA exam from Sylhet MC College, setting a new record of marks obtained in the then East Pakistan. Later he secured the first-class-first position in BA Honors (English Literature) in University of Dhaka. After completing MA from University of Dhaka in 1955, he joined Pakistan Civil Service in 1956. During his service, he studied one year in 1957-58 in Oxford and received MPA from Harvard in 1963-64.In brief, Mr. Muhit has a brilliant presence in all spheres of life—politics, study, culture, or sports. He was elected Joint-secretary (1952-53) and vice-president (1954-55) of Salimullah Hall Student Senate of University of Dhaka.
It is in his student life that Mr. Muhit came in contact with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib and, with his direction, actively took part in the war for his motherland. He is a well-known face in the World Bank, IMF, ADB, and the United Nations (UN). He was the chairperson of Eskap in 1983-84. Mr. Muhit performed in many important positions of Bangladesh Government. At first, he was appointed planning secretary in January 1972. In December 1974, he was elected executive director in ADB from Bangladesh and India. He was the only person from Bangladesh to achieve this position and the youngest executive director in the history of the bank. Mr. Muhit accepted the responsibility of finance and planning ministry of Ershad government to take part in the reform activities at the right moment.
